If new statistics are anything to go by, we have emerged from the low-carb era of recent years, when bread was considered a suspect indulgence, and are embracing the staple like never before. Sales are soaring, with a recent report commissioned by the bakery supplier Délifrance, Prove It, predicting that the UK bread market will grow by 15 per cent from its present value of £7.8 billion to reach £9 billion by 2026.
